BMFcast413 – Shaft’s Big Score! – Cottonelle Comes to Harlem

Shaft’s Big Score! (1972) is the quickly-made sequel to the Blaxploitation History Month classic. This time John Shaft (Richard Roundtree) is tracking down his friend’s killer and a missing $250,000 in cash. Mobsters, lowlifes and cops all stand in his way. Can Shaft get the job done again?

In the second half we talk a bunch about Marvel’s Black Panther (2018) after revisiting some older (and recent) films like Real Genius (1985), Tombstone (1993), The Big Sick (2017), and Central Intelligence (2016).

BMFcast412 – Hot Potato – Crab Ran-goons

Hot Potato (1976) is a quasi-sequel to Black Belt Jones (1974), a Blaxploitation History Month classic. Jim Kelly returns and heads to Thailand to rescue a kidnapped senator’s daughter. Unfortunately he brought help with him this time, in the form of Rhino and Johnny Chicago. Will attempts at comedy sink this one into Bags territory, or will the martial arts gain it Jox?

After the break we all discuss Thor Ragnarok (2017) in preparation for Black Panther (2018), as well as BJ wrapping up his Marvel catch-up before we take some listener e-mails.

BMFcast411 – Disco Godfather – Put Your Weight On It

Disco Godfather (1979) returns Rudy Ray Moore to Blaxploitation History Month. This time it’s in the more serious tale of angel dust taking over the streets. The Disco Godfather himself decides to put an end to it after his nephew Bucky overdoses. Can stylish outfits and a lot of roughing up drug dealers save the day? More importantly, does it gain it Jox?

In the second half we discuss Netflix’s brand new The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), and BJ catches up on his Marvel Cinematic Universe entries with The Incredible Hulk (2008), Thor (2011), and Iron Man 3 (2013).

BMFcast410 – Cotton Comes to Harlem – Chili Woman

Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970) begins our 7th annual Blaxploitation History Month! Gravedigger Jones (Godfrey Cambridge) and Coffin Ed Johnson (Raymond St. Jacques) are tracking down $87,000 in stolen cash, taken by the crooked Rev. Deke O’Malley (Calvin Lockhart). But if Deke doesn’t know where the money went, who does? We have a great time with the double- and triple-crosses, as well as the chemistry between the leads in this great detective story.

After the break we talk TV. A lot of TV, as Harlo revisits Cheers and Frasier, BJ checks in on The Good Place, Chuck marvels at ER in HD, Maki catches up on Better Call Saul and Atlanta, and Black Lightning sucks in Harlo.

Want to get in touch with us? E-mail us at bmf@bmfcast.com or call the Garfield Hotline at 910-5JOX-BMF (910-556-9263). Enjoy!

BMFcast364 – Petey Wheatstraw – Alabama Crabs

Petey Wheatstraw (1977) concludes Blaxploitation History Month with the return of Rudy Ray Moore. He’s a man who’s sold his soul to the devil for revenge. Will he end up getting caught as the devil’s son-in-law? More importantly, will RRM make a coherent movie? (Spoiler: NOPE.)

After the break Chuck talks about Arrival (2016) and The Girl on the Train (2016) while Harlo continues the Pinball Project with The Shadow (1994). We also take some listener e-mails. Enjoy!

BMFcast363 – Cool Breeze – Fart Buster

Cool Breeze (1972) brings BMFcast alum Thalmus Rasulala back for Blaxploitation History Month in a heist movie gone wrong. He’s the ringleader of a not-necessarily-trustworthy gang in this blaxploitation remake of The Asphalt Jungle (1950).

In the second half Harlo continues his Pinball Project with Congo (1995), Chuck goes back to Jack Reacher in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016), Tim Burtons it up with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016), and we also discuss a little shoot-em-up type movie called John Wick: Chapter 2. On top of that, we announce a contest you’ll want to listen for as well as a whole new slew of Patreon-exclusive podcasts. (Hint: if you like Doctor Who, Star Trek, or Futurama you may be interested!) Enjoy!

BMFcast362 – That Man Bolt – Hakuna Kumada

That Man Bolt (1973) has Fred Williamson as Jefferson Bolt, a smooth-talking international courier who gets tied up in a convoluted scheme involving a million-dollar briefcase, corrupt casino bosses, and ninja assassins. How many Jox will we award this Blaxploitation History Month entry?

In the second half, Maki talks about Jason Bourne (2016), Cop Out (2010), and We’re The Millers (2013) before we dive into a fresh round of listener correspondence. Enjoy!

BMFcast361 – Shaft – Bumpy Shaft

Shaft (1971) begins our 6th annual Blaxploitation History Month with a classic. Richard Roundtree plays the titular character, a private detective caught up in a  kidnapping case and a mafia turf war. Does it live up to its theme song and reputation?

After the break, Harlo gives his thoughts on Arrival (2016), Maki talks about his favorite movie, Out of Sight (1998),  we take some listener mails and discuss dollar theater experiences of our pasts. Enjoy!

BMFcast313 – State Senator Stephen Stills

BMF-Ep313-slider

Sweet Jesus, Preacherman (1973) wraps up this year’s Blaxploitation History Month. Can TC from Magnum PI convince us he’s a hitman convincing churchgoers he’s their new preacher? Will he clean up the streets or end as shady as William Smith (yes, him, again), who hired him? Also, can the movie possibly live up to its awesome poster?

The second half is turned over to you, the listeners as we take a boatload of e-mails and voicemails discussing movies that misunderstand technology, Lucha Underground, blaxploitation’s role in modern entertainment, and even the very essence of Chuck Fine™. Enjoy!

BMFcast312 – The Hamburger Pimp

BMF-Ep312-slider

Trouble Man (1972) continues Blaxploitation History Month as Robert Hooks plays Mr. T, the coolest protagonist in the history of cool protagonists. He never loses his head, even when caught between multiple gangs and a police chief out to get him. Trust us, watch this movie.

After the break Harlo tells us how much he loves Deadpool while Chuck continues the Ryan Reynolds train as he takes the bullet and watches R.I.P.D. Enjoy!
