BMFcast Extra 029 – One Armed Boxer

To ease ourselves back into the Shaw Brothers universe we make a quick detour into Golden Harvest territory to cover 1972’s ONE ARMED BOXER, the movie that will then allow us to watch MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE.

BMFcast Extra 027 – Executioners From Shaolin

The Shaolin temple gets wrecked, its master is killed, and its students are sent packing. Lots of time passes. People put on plays. They get married. Kids are produced. Every so often, revenge is attempted.

BMFcast Extra 024 – The Casino

A split decision this week as we watch 1972’s THE CASINO, an alternate universe Gambit origin story where the whole world revolves around dice games and ways to cheat at them. Also, kung fu, betrothed wives and revenge!

BMFcast372 – A*P*E – Col. GD Davis

A*P*E (1976) continues APEril in grand tradition with a Korean King Kong knockoff with an incredibly low budget. Can abysmal editing, Joanna Kerns’ screaming, and one very annoyed colonel make everything better? (What do you think!?)

In the second half we give our thoughts on the first few episodes of Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return (2017), BJ finally sees John Wick (2014), and we discuss a new entry in a franchise we’ve mentioned in passing a few times in the past, The Fate of the Furious (2017). (F8! Get it!?) Enjoy!

BMFcast370 – Mighty Peking Man – Mighty Peeking Man

The Mighty Peking Man (1977) begins a brand new APE-ril in Shaw Bros fashion! It may be yet another remake of King Kong, but it’s certainly got that Shaw Bros touch, with random love montages, monster trucks battling a giant ape, and of course, large-scale city destruction. Will all this add up to Jox?

After the break we talk some TV with the recently-concluded Big Little Lies and Review, while talk of Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (2010) leads to e-mails and discussions on Rogue One (2016) and everything Star Wars under the sun. Or galaxy. Or something. Enjoy!

BMFcast Extra 021 – 36th Chamber of Shaolin

Time for another one of the “big guns”. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (aka Master Killer) is one of the Shaw Brothers’ biggest hits. When you watch it, you can see why. Harlo and Chuck are here to break down all the action.

BMFcast Extra 020 – Dirty Ho

Yes, it has an unfortunately misleading title… unfortunate because otherwise this movie is AWESOME. Billed as a comedy, this one has some of the best fight scenes we’ve ever witnessed. Pure martial arts genius at work in this one. Come listen to us rave about it.

BMFcast Extra 019 – Five Deadly Venoms

We needed a baseline for our Shaw Brothers project, so we dipped a couple years into the past to check out one of the more famous of the studio’s martial arts flicks, 1978’s Five Deadly Venoms. Enjoy!

BMFcast364 – Petey Wheatstraw – Alabama Crabs

Petey Wheatstraw (1977) concludes Blaxploitation History Month with the return of Rudy Ray Moore. He’s a man who’s sold his soul to the devil for revenge. Will he end up getting caught as the devil’s son-in-law? More importantly, will RRM make a coherent movie? (Spoiler: NOPE.)

After the break Chuck talks about Arrival (2016) and The Girl on the Train (2016) while Harlo continues the Pinball Project with The Shadow (1994). We also take some listener e-mails. Enjoy!

BMFcast363 – Cool Breeze – Fart Buster

Cool Breeze (1972) brings BMFcast alum Thalmus Rasulala back for Blaxploitation History Month in a heist movie gone wrong. He’s the ringleader of a not-necessarily-trustworthy gang in this blaxploitation remake of The Asphalt Jungle (1950).

In the second half Harlo continues his Pinball Project with Congo (1995), Chuck goes back to Jack Reacher in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016), Tim Burtons it up with Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016), and we also discuss a little shoot-em-up type movie called John Wick: Chapter 2. On top of that, we announce a contest you’ll want to listen for as well as a whole new slew of Patreon-exclusive podcasts. (Hint: if you like Doctor Who, Star Trek, or Futurama you may be interested!) Enjoy!
