BMFcast412 – Hot Potato – Crab Ran-goons

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast412 – Hot Potato – Crab Ran-goons

Hot Potato (1976) is a quasi-sequel to Black Belt Jones (1974), a Blaxploitation History Month classic. Jim Kelly returns and heads to Thailand to rescue a kidnapped senator’s daughter. Unfortunately he brought help with him this time, in the form of Rhino and Johnny Chicago. Will attempts at comedy sink this one into Bags territory, or will the martial arts gain it Jox?

After the break we all discuss Thor Ragnarok (2017) in preparation for Black Panther (2018), as well as BJ wrapping up his Marvel catch-up before we take some listener e-mails.

BMFcast Extra 065 – Scavenger Hunt

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast Extra 065 – Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger Hunt (1979) is one of Chuck’s childhood favorites and a first time watch for Harlo. How will two grown men react to a broad, wacky farce involving every funny person who existed in 1979?

BMFcast411 – Disco Godfather – Put Your Weight On It

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast411 – Disco Godfather – Put Your Weight On It

Disco Godfather (1979) returns Rudy Ray Moore to Blaxploitation History Month. This time it’s in the more serious tale of angel dust taking over the streets. The Disco Godfather himself decides to put an end to it after his nephew Bucky overdoses. Can stylish outfits and a lot of roughing up drug dealers save the day? More importantly, does it gain it Jox?

In the second half we discuss Netflix’s brand new The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), and BJ catches up on his Marvel Cinematic Universe entries with The Incredible Hulk (2008), Thor (2011), and Iron Man 3 (2013).

BMFcast Extra 064 – Sheena Queen of the Jungle

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast Extra 064 – Sheena Queen of the Jungle

Sheena (1984) gives Tanya Roberts her chance to play The Beastmaster as an orphaned child raised by an African tribe and taught magic powers to be their eventual savior. It’s a PG film, but she’s quite nude in this, and that’s fantastic.

BMFcast410 – Cotton Comes to Harlem – Chili Woman

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast410 – Cotton Comes to Harlem – Chili Woman

Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970) begins our 7th annual Blaxploitation History Month! Gravedigger Jones (Godfrey Cambridge) and Coffin Ed Johnson (Raymond St. Jacques) are tracking down $87,000 in stolen cash, taken by the crooked Rev. Deke O’Malley (Calvin Lockhart). But if Deke doesn’t know where the money went, who does? We have a great time with the double- and triple-crosses, as well as the chemistry between the leads in this great detective story.

After the break we talk TV. A lot of TV, as Harlo revisits Cheers and Frasier, BJ checks in on The Good Place, Chuck marvels at ER in HD, Maki catches up on Better Call Saul and Atlanta, and Black Lightning sucks in Harlo.

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast Extra 063 – Bright

Bright (2017) is the problematic Netflix fantasy action cop film starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton that everybody is talking about. So here are two more people talking about it. Two people with head colds. Sorry about the phlegm!

BMFcast409 – Van Nuys Blvd – Van Guys

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast409 – Van Nuys Blvd – Van Guys

Van Nuys Blvd (1979) wraps up #Vanuary with both vans and boulevards. It’s a laid-back slice of life time capsule clearly influenced by American Graffiti, and clearly an influence on Richard Linklater and others. It’s good times without consequences as the 1970s come to a close. Did we enjoy the trip?

After the break we get a little less focused as we discuss streaming services and movie availability, as well as reactions to both the Oscar nominations and the Razzies.

BMFcast Extra 062 – Rollercoaster

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast Extra 062 – Rollercoaster

Rollercoaster (1977) is a perfect analogy for 2017. You want to go to an amusement park and have a good time but then a madman shows up and ruins your whole day. George Segal is here to save everyone, also just like 2017.

BMFcast408 – Supervan – Portvanteau

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast408 – Supervan – Portvanteau

Supervan (1977) continues #Vanuary. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a goofy-looking solar-powered van and a lot of van footage from the Biannual Bicentennial Freakout ’76 Festival. Can whipped cream, lasers, and a whole lot of vannin’ earn it Jox?

After the break Maki hits the theater for The Shape of Water (2017) which leads to some general chat about the films of Guillermo del Toro. Harlo catches us up on his Golden Jox catch-up movies with XXX: The Return of Xander Cage (2017), Shyamalan’s Split (2017),  Sophia Coppola’s The Beguiled (2017), The Great Wall (2017), which we discover was directed by the man who made the awesome House of Flying Daggers (2004), and lastly Chuck and Harlo discuss the disappointing Geostorm (2017).

BMFcast Extra 061 – Prancer

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off on BMFcast Extra 061 – Prancer

Prancer (1989) is a Holiday film that neither Chuck nor Harlo have ever seen before, and it produces wildly different reactions. One thing can be agreed on though, and that is that Sam Elliott is awesome. Merry December everyone!
