BMFSpoilCast04 – Sucker Punch

This punch is just a little off the mark. But there's still some gold within.

It’s been a while but we’re back with a new Spoilcast! This one is all about Sucker Punch (2011) and we try to dispel a little of the vitriol that’s been spewed about Zack Snyder’s latest. We’re not going to say we love it but we break it down a little more than blind hatred.

    My comment is pretty spoilerific so watch out random passer bys.

    Did you guys get the feeling that if someone other than Snyder came in and did their own cut of the film it might have been better? I mean maybe someone else did but I think if they just rearranged the movie a bit it might have been a lot better. I think it was a mistake showing the lobotomy scene so early in the movie. Plus if they interjected more reality scenes in like that brief instance with the map I think character attachment would have existed to maybe a small degree.

    So Harlo…. Did you just declare all anime and manga to have terrible storylines?

    You guys hate America don’t you?

    * Obviously, spoiler warning! *

    I don’t think editing would have improved the movie much, unfortunately. I certainly wouldn’t have started it off with two music videos where the music doesn’t really work with the visuals, but where do you move either of them? Moving more of the lobotomy stuff to the end would make the final minutes drag even more than they already do. The problem is that what Snyder cares about and what I care about seem to be diametrically opposed in this movie and editing won’t change that.

    I agree that tying their dream missions in with the real world would have helped, but it also would have exposed how nonsensical the tie-in is. Still, it would have made the story more clear by showing us exactly what did happen to Amber & Blondie, which bothered me that it was so abruptly glossed over. Rocket’s death is annoying because we see her die in 2 fake worlds but we never see how she dies in reality. Just a lot of problems in this movie that can’t be easily fixed from what they filmed…

    Queen is not my thing and never will be. I can only take so much falsetto with voice duplication. Which is to say none. You are not the first to be appalled by this and you won’t be the last.

    I was kind of making the blanket statement that anime storylines are generally sub par yes. Now in the defense column, animes that I have enjoyed are Cowboy Bebop (the closest to perfect I can think of), Outlaw Star, Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D, Golgo 13, Trigun, FLCL and a few others. That being said, none of those would cut it AT ALL if you were to film them live action and serve them up to a mainstream American audience verbatim. They’d be panned harder than Sucker Punch. Ultimately the point I was trying to make, other than a jab at harcore anime fans in general, is that Sucker Punch is probably more cohesive a narrative than any anime out there (at least in my admittedly somewhat limited exposure).

  4. Listening to this now it’s hilarious to hear you “worry about Superman”.
